Packing for Los Angeles: A Spreadsheet-Fueled Strategy
I literally just made a spreadsheet for what to pack for a month in L.A. in May. Due to this tendency, I’ve asked friends before if I’m a type B of the type As or a type A of the type Bs, and the consensus is always type B of the type As. It’s less that I’m so organized and more that if I don’t make lists, my head feels all over the place, especially when I’m living out of a suitcase. When I think of L.A. style, relaxed but put-together outfits come to mind. I even realized I’m packing a lot of pieces from L.A.-based brands, including Campbell&Kramer, Charlie Beads, Clare V., Geel, Kye Intimates, Nia, and Rue Sophie. My outfit formulas are pretty simple: a tank top with a knee-length skirt, an easy dress, or capris and a trench with ballet flats or kitten-heel sandals. As always, there are a bunch of skirts and dresses and a lot of basics to mix and match. Some of what I’m bringing isn’t available anymore, like my favorite Chimi Giada Sunglasses and Stuart Weitzman kitten-heel sandals, a few of my go-to swimsuits, and some vintage items. The goal is for all of this to fit in a carry-on, so we’ll see how that goes… I’ll be ordering vacuum-seal storage bags to try to save space. Below, take a look at some of the things I’m bringing in my suitcase —from clothes to beauty.

My packing process always starts with a spreadsheet. Seriously. It’s a little obsessive, I know, but it’s the only way I can avoid a chaotic suitcase and a frantic morning before a flight. This trip to Los Angeles is a month-long affair, and the weather in May is typically gorgeous – sunshine and temperatures hovering around 70 degrees during the day, cooling down to the 50s at night. That means layering is key. I’m aiming for a minimalist, capsule wardrobe approach, focusing on versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a multitude of outfits. I’m prioritizing brands based in L.A. because, well, I love supporting local designers and I find their aesthetic perfectly captures the city’s vibe. It’s a relaxed but polished style – think effortless chic with a touch of California cool. I’m also committed to packing carry-on only, which is a serious challenge, requiring strategic planning and a commitment to wrinkle-resistant fabrics. Vacuum-seal bags are my best friend, and I’m prepared to squeeze every last drop of space from my suitcase. Let’s dive into the specifics of what’s making the cut.
1. The Foundation: Neutral Basics – Approximately 15 Pieces
Let’s start with the building blocks. A capsule wardrobe thrives on a solid foundation of neutral basics. I’m bringing about 15 pieces that can be easily mixed and matched. This includes five classic white t-shirts (different necklines for variety), three black tank tops (again, different cuts), and five pairs of well-fitting denim capris. The key here is quality – I’m opting for fabrics that resist wrinkles and don’t require ironing. I’m prioritizing lightweight cotton and linen blends. These basics will be the backbone of nearly every outfit I create, allowing me to quickly assemble a stylish look with minimal effort. It’s worth noting that finding these staples at affordable prices can be a challenge – I’ve been scouring consignment shops and online retailers to stretch my budget. The average cost of a good quality white t-shirt can easily exceed $40, so smart shopping is crucial.
2. The Dress Collection – 7 Dresses for Endless Combinations
Dresses are a must-have for Los Angeles. They’re comfortable, versatile, and instantly elevate any outfit. I’m packing seven dresses in a range of styles and lengths. There’s a Rue Sophie halter dress, a Djerf Avenue Breezy Dress Black, a Campbell&Kramer Aurora Halter Dress, and a Santal Dress from Nia. I also have a Reformation Soren Sheer Alpaca Sweater Top which I can wear as a dress over a skirt, and a Gimaguas Bomba Maxi Dress for those evenings when I want to dress up a little. Finally, I’m bringing an Agustina Maxi Dress for evenings out. The variety ensures I’ll have a dress for every occasion – from casual brunches to evening dinners. I’m also considering adding a couple of midi dresses for a more polished look. The fabric of these dresses is important – I’m looking for breathable fabrics like rayon and cotton that won’t cling or wrinkle easily. Selecting the right colors is also key; I’m opting for neutrals like beige, navy, and olive green, which pair well with everything in my wardrobe.
3. Skirts Galore – 6 Skirts for Dynamic Outfits
Skirts are my go-to for creating a variety of outfits. I’m packing six skirts in different lengths and styles. There’s a 437 The Perfect Capri Pants, a Charlie Beads The 90’s Bias Skirt, a Kye Intimates Recline Skirt, and a Rashi Triangle Bikini Top (yes, for evenings by the pool!). I also brought a CDLP Ribbed Stretch Lyocell and Cotton-Blend T-Shirt for a skirt-over-top look, and a Free People Lowen Midi Skirt. The versatility of skirts allows me to easily transition from daytime to evening. I’m particularly drawn to skirts with interesting textures and prints, like the bias cut skirt from Charlie Beads, which adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit. I’m also considering packing a pleated skirt for a more vintage-inspired look. The key is to choose skirts that are comfortable and easy to wear – I’m avoiding anything too restrictive or fussy.
4. Layering Essentials – 3 Knitwear Pieces
Los Angeles evenings can get surprisingly cool, so layering is essential. I’m bringing three key knitwear pieces: a Damson Madder Tabitha Polka Dot Reversible Merino Wool Cardigan and a Reformation Soren Sheer Alpaca Sweater Top. I’m also packing a lightweight linen button-down shirt that can be worn as a jacket or tied around the waist. These pieces add warmth and style without adding bulk. Merino wool is a great choice because it’s lightweight, breathable, and naturally odor-resistant. The reversible cardigan is a particularly smart addition – it offers two different looks in one garment. I’m prioritizing neutral colors like gray, beige, and navy to ensure they coordinate with everything in my wardrobe.

Footwear is crucial for completing any outfit. I’m packing four pairs of shoes that are both stylish and comfortable. I’m bringing Carel shoes, At least a handful of many have these exact Margaux flats, Aeyde Vero Nappa Leather Sandals, and a Stuart Weitzman Minimalist Slide 50 Sandals. These shoes are versatile enough to wear with everything from jeans to dresses. I’m prioritizing comfort – I’m avoiding heels that will make me uncomfortable after a long day of walking. The sandals are perfect for warm weather, while the flats are ideal for evenings out. I’m also considering packing a pair of sneakers for extra comfort and versatility.
6. Swimwear & Accessories – 3 Key Pieces
Don’t forget swimwear and accessories! I’m packing a Rashi Triangle Bikini Top and a pair of Kye Intimates Recline Skirt. I’m also bringing a black bag from Kabas – a versatile accessory that can be used for everything from shopping to evenings out. Finally, I’m bringing Brook and York Aubrey Huggie Hoop Earrings. These are simple but elegant and add a touch of sparkle to any outfit. I’m prioritizing accessories that are both stylish and practical. The black bag is essential for carrying all of my essentials, while the hoop earrings add a touch of glamour. I’m also bringing a Leatherology Medium Train Case Black for organizing my toiletries and makeup.
7. Beauty Essentials – 10 Products for a Polished Look
Maintaining a polished look is important, even on a relaxing vacation. I’m packing a curated selection of beauty essentials. This includes a Sofie Pavitt Face Skin Jelly Oil-Free Gel Moisturizer, Sofie Pavitt Face Screentime Non-Comedogenic Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30, OUAI Fine Hair Shampoo & Conditioner Set, Rōz Milk Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner Hair Serum, D.S. & DURGA I Don’t Know What Eau de Parfum, a Tangle Teezer, YSL Beauty Nu Bare Look Tint, Westman Atelier Mini Petite Face Trace Cream Contour Stick, MAC Lustreglass Sheer-Shine Lipstick, and Salt & Stone Santal & Vetiver Extra-Strength Aluminum-Free Deodorant. These products will keep my skin hydrated, protected from the sun, and my hair looking its best. I’m also bringing iS Clinical Active Peel Treatment System for a little at-home spa treatment. I’m aiming for lightweight, travel-sized products to save space.
Packing for Los Angeles is a strategic process, balancing style with practicality. The goal is to create a versatile wardrobe that can be mixed and matched to create a multitude of outfits. By prioritizing neutral basics, versatile dresses and skirts, and essential accessories, I’m confident I can pack everything I need for a month-long adventure in Southern California – all while sticking to a carry-on size. It’s a challenge, but the reward of traveling light and stylishly is well worth the effort. And honestly, the spreadsheet definitely helps!
